What Is Ice Renovation?

Why Do Ice Rinks Occasionally Remove the Ice and Start Over?

If you've ever heard that your ice rink is "closing for ice renovation," you may have wondered what that actually means.  After all, isn't ice just frozen water? Not exactly!

An ice rink is a carefully maintained surface that is used thousands of times each week by skaters, hockey players, and instructors. Over time, even with daily resurfacing by the Zamboni, the ice can develop imperfections that affect the quality and safety of the skating surface.

That's why many rinks periodically perform a complete ice renovation.

What Happens During Ice Renovation?

First, the existing ice is melted and removed from the rink floor.

Once the ice is gone, rink staff can inspect and repair important components underneath the surface, including:

  • Refrigeration pipes

  • Concrete flooring

  • Dasher boards

  • Protective glass

  • Drainage systems

  • Rink markings and logos

Why Is Ice Renovation Important?

Regular ice renovation helps provide:

~ A smoother skating surface
~ Better ice quality
~ Improved safety for skaters
~ More consistent conditions for lessons and training
~ Protection of expensive refrigeration equipment

Just like roads occasionally need resurfacing, ice rinks need periodic maintenance to stay in top condition.

The Good News

While it can be disappointing when a rink closes temporarily, ice renovation is one of the best investments a facility can make for its skaters. When the rink reopens, you'll often notice cleaner, smoother, and more consistent ice—giving skaters a great surface to learn, practice, and enjoy.
