Why Join Learn to Skate USA? And what will my skater learn?

We recommend all beginning skaters keep an active Learn to Skate USA membership.

Why Join?

Why? Because Learn to Skate USA gives beginner skaters a trusted, nationally recognized foundation — and it includes secondary sports accident insurance, which adds an extra layer of protection for skaters and families while participating in Learn to Skate USA programs and events.

U.S. Figure Skating says it best: “Before you can become a figure skater, you need to learn how to ice skate.” Learn to Skate USA is where that journey begins.

The program is designed especially for beginners, with a step-by-step curriculum that helps skaters build skills safely and confidently. Learn to Skate USA describes its curriculum as being “designed to build skills and confidence” as skaters move through the levels.

The seasonal membership runs July 1st - June 30 annually. Your Membership includes helpful beginner benefits, such as:

✔ Secondary sports accident insurance
✔ A welcome packet and skater record book
✔ Access to the Learn to Skate USA mobile app
✔ Progress tracking and badges
✔ Instruction through a nationally recognized curriculum
✔ Opportunities to participate in events, performances, and competitions

Most importantly, Learn to Skate USA helps families feel connected to the larger skating community. Their mission is “to provide a fun and positive experience” that encourages a lifelong love of skating.

Your $20 seasonal membership fee supports your skater’s safety, progress, confidence, and future opportunities on the ice.

We are excited to continue giving every beginner skater at Ice Palace a strong, safe, and successful start!

What Will My Child Learn in Learn to Skate Classes?

Before parents sign their child up for skating lessons, one of the first questions they ask is:

“What will my child actually learn?”

The answer is simple: your skater will learn the foundation they need to feel safe, confident, and successful on the ice.

Learn to Skate classes are designed to teach beginning skaters step by step, starting with the most important basics: balance, safety, movement, control, and confidence.

In the beginning levels, skaters learn how to:

✔ Fall safely and get back up
✔ Stand and balance on the ice
✔ March forward
✔ Glide on two feet
✔ Begin skating forward and backward
✔ Stop safely
✔ Turn and change direction
✔ Build confidence away from the wall

Learn to Skate USA describes the Basic Skills program as a progressive curriculum that helps skaters build a strong foundation. The program introduces important skills such as forward skating, backward skating, stops, edges, and turns.

As coaches, our goal is to help each skater feel successful at their own pace. Some skaters are brave right away. Others need more time holding hands, staying near the wall, or learning to get back up with a smile. Both are completely normal.

The basics matter because every skating skill begins here. Whether your child wants to figure skate, play hockey, join a camp, perform in a show, compete one day, or simply enjoy skating with family and friends, Learn to Skate classes give them the tools to begin.

Most importantly, we want every skater to leave class feeling proud, encouraged, and excited to come back.

Because the first goal is confidence.
