What are “Skating Skills” Tests?
By Traci Milner US Figure Skating Senior Coach
One foundational aspect of the figure skating journey is mastering Skating Skills via the testing structure, formerly known as "Moves in the Field." These tests include fundamental patterns including edges, steps and turns that emphasize continuous flow, edge quality, extension, power, quickness and turn execution serving as the backbone of a skater's technical proficiency.
As a senior-rated coach with over 30 years of experience, I've had the privilege of guiding numerous skaters to achieve their U.S. Figure Skating gold medals in Skating Skills. These tests are structured to progressively challenge and develop a skater's abilities and build the technical quality of basic footwork, edge usage, and transitions between movements.
They encompass a series of patterns and exercises designed to enhance edge work, turns, steps, and overall skating quality. The U.S. Figure Skating test structure offers various levels, including:
Pre-Preliminary
Preliminary
Pre-Bronze
Bronze
Pre-Silver
Silver
Pre-Gold
Gold
Each level builds upon the previous, not only in difficulty but also the standard of performance, ensuring a comprehensive development of skills.
The importance of these tests cannot be overstated. They not only ensure that skaters have a solid technical foundation but also prepare them for the demands of competitive programs. By systematically progressing through these levels, skaters develop the necessary variety of turns, posture and carriage, strength & power, extension & flow, required for higher-level elements and programs.
Testing typically takes place during scheduled test sessions organized by local figure skating clubs. Skaters perform the required patterns before a panel of U.S. Figure Skating judges, who evaluate the skaters skills based on criteria such as edge quality, control, power, and posture. A passing mark allows the skater to advance to the next level, bringing them closer to their personal goals and competitive aspirations as these tests are the prerequisite to competing in some competitions.
