Snowplow Sam vs. Basic Skills: Which Class Is Right for My Skater?

When your child is just starting skating lessons, one of the first things parents want to know is: “Which class should my child be in?”

Learn to Skate USA offers beginner classes based on age and skill level, so skaters can learn in a way that feels safe, comfortable, and age-appropriate.

Snowplow Sam:

For our youngest skaters, Snowplow Sam is usually the best place to begin. This class is designed for children ages 5 and under. Skaters learn through fun, games, simple directions, and lots of encouragement.

In Snowplow Sam, skaters begin working on:

✔ Balance
✔ Falling safely and getting back up
✔ Marching forward
✔ Beginning glides
✔ Basic stops
✔ Forward and backward skating skills
✔ Confidence on the ice

Basic Skills:

For skaters 6 and over, Basic Skills is usually the best starting point. Basic Skills teaches the fundamentals of skating in a progressive, step-by-step format. Skaters work on forward skating, backward skating, stopping, edges, turns, balance, and control.

In Basic Skills, skaters will be introduced to:

✔ Forward & backward skating
✔ Stops
✔ Edges
✔ Turns
✔ Confidence on the ice

The basics matter because every skating skill begins here. Whether your child wants to figure skate, play hockey, join a camp, perform in a show, compete one day, or simply enjoy skating with family and friends, Learn to Skate classes give them the tools to begin.

Most importantly, we want every skater to leave class feeling proud, encouraged, and excited to come back.

Because the first goal is confidence.
